Key Responsibilities:1. Garden Maintenance and Crop Management
- Garden Upkeep: Oversee regular maintenance of community garden spaces, including watering, weeding, and pest control to ensure healthy crop growth.
- Planting and Harvesting: Develop and implement planting schedules that align with seasonal cycles, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh produce.
- Crop Selection and Rotation: Work with the team to plan crop rotation and select plants that will provide maximum nutritional and community benefit.
- Volunteer Recruitment: Assist with recruiting and organizing volunteers to help with garden tasks, ensuring a strong and engaged volunteer presence.
- Training and Supervision: Provide guidance and support to volunteers, teaching them about urban agriculture practices and safety protocols.
- Community Building: Foster a positive, welcoming atmosphere for volunteers, encouraging participation and learning within the garden space.
- Workshops and Tours: Organize or assist with garden workshops, tours, and hands-on sessions that teach participants about urban gardening, holistic nutrition, and food preparedness.
- Nutritional Education: Share knowledge about nutrition, herbal medicine, and natural remedies (if applicable) to enhance community understanding of holistic health.
- Emergency Preparedness Education: Integrate lessons on food storage, crop preservation, and other preparedness strategies as part of the educational programming.
- Garden Expansion: Collaborate on projects to expand and improve garden spaces, such as building new planting beds or composting systems.
- Sustainable Practices: Identify and implement sustainable gardening practices, including composting, rainwater harvesting, and organic pest management.
- Supply and Resource Management: Help manage supplies and resources for the garden, ensuring tools, seeds, and materials are available and well-organized.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
- Passionate about sustainable food systems, urban agriculture, and food security.
- Experienced or Interested in community gardening, horticulture, or nutrition, with a hands-on approach to learning and teaching.
- Physically Active and Outdoorsy, able to work comfortably outdoors and perform garden tasks.
- Knowledgeable in Holistic Health or emergency preparedness is a plus, bringing added value to educational programming.
- Organized and Reliable in coordinating schedules, managing tasks, and working with volunteers.
